In times gone by, craftsmanship was a part of daily life – the graceful curve of the ships stempost, the resonant tap of the hammer on rivets, the fine detail on the hand stitched garment, right through to the artistry of the warriors’ craft. And when the work was done, the folk of the community would gather round to share story and song in ceilidhs, which translates simply as ‘gatherings’. GalGael’s craft events recreate some of that distinctive atmosphere. Visitors wandering between the industrious craftsfolk will discover some of the stories behind our traditional crafts & Scotland’s vibrant culture - the music, the craic, the crafts and the people.
Witness the shipwright’s keen craftsmanship and take in the skill of the leatherworker, or the deft fingers of the basket-weaver. GalGael will provide a taste of how these crafts & Scotland’s native culture are being rekindled in Modern Scotland.
We offer a variety of craft demonstration and events services. At one end of the scale you can hire the ‘whole shebang’, something like a craft village, complete with traditional costume and incorporating our Birlinn, a traditional Scottish galley. Or you can book individual craftspeople to suit your own requirements and budget. Please download the attached for an indication of cost and contact us to discuss your requirements and booking requests.
Now, courtesy of Clyde Waterfront Regeneration, we also manage a community-run marquee hire service. The marquee is available to community groups and other agencies in the Clyde Waterfront area at a more favourable cost than a commercial hire.
